Research Statement:
The research in our laboratory focuses on dissecting the molecular mechanisms controlling estrogen responsiveness in the female reproductive system. Estrogen mediates its actions through its receptor, estrogen receptor (ER), a member of the nuclear receptor family. Members of this family are key molecular targets in the pharmacological intervention for diseases including breast and prostate cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic X syndrome and osteoporosis, among others. Disregulation of ER is prominent in common reproductive pathologies such as breast cancer and infertility where it is often expressed at levels above those of normal tissues. We are pursuing research into the control of cellular levels of ER by estrogen with emphasis on transcriptional, translational and post-translational mechanisms. Our research incorporates models of steroid signal transduction pathways, and basic mechanisms of transcription.
